Twee weken geleden (december 2021) woonde ik een lezing bij van Wallace Chen in Diva. Tot 9 januari toont hij er een selectie van zijn vlinders. De mini expo is zeker een bezoekje waard!
Deze juwelenkunstenaar heeft al heel wat uitvindingen op zijn palmares staan. Hij is een meester in het beheersen van titanium, dit super lichte metaal kan de meest wonderbaarlijke kleuren vertonen, maar is zeer moeilijk te controleren.
Hij vond een porcelein uit dat onbreekbaar is, het is 5x zo sterk als staal. Wallace Chan gebruikt het ook in zijn sieraden.
Hij begon zijn carrière met het slijpen van edelstenen en bedacht een manier om zo'n fijne jade schijfjes te slijpen, dat het lijkt alsof ze licht geven. Ook creëerde hij de Wallace cut. Bij deze slijpvorm wordt een figuur onderaan de edelsteen uitgesneden. Als je langs de bovenkant naar de steen kijkt zie je de figuur echter 5x dankzij de weerspiegeling in de facetten.
Two weeks ago (December 2021), I attended a lecture by Wallace Chen at Diva. Until January 9th, he is exhibiting a selection of his butterflies there. The mini expo is definitely worth a visit!
This jewelry artist has quite a few inventions to his name. He is a master at manipulating titanium, this super-light metal can display the most marvelous colors, but is very difficult to control.
He invented a new kind of porcelain that is unbreakable, it is 5 times stronger than steel. Wallace Chan also uses it in his jewelry.
He began his career by cutting gemstones and devised a way to cut such fine jade discs that they seem to emit light. He also created the Wallace cut. With this cutting style, a figure is carved at the bottom of the gemstone. When you look at the stone from the top, you see the figure magnified 5 times due to the reflection in the facets.
Wallace Chan leeft een beetje als een kluizenaar. Hij komt soms 3 maanden niet uit zijn studio als hij aan een project aan het werken is. Het vraagt wat van een mens om zo'n meesterschap te bereiken. Hiervoor is passie niet voldoende, obsessie lijkt me een betere omschrijving. Deze kunstenaar gaat steeds weer op zoek naar nieuwe materialen en manieren om ze te beheersen. Eens hij ze onder controle heeft, is het tijd om naar iets nieuws uit te kijken. Wallace Chen groeide op in grote armoede. Vanaf zijn 5e jaar moest hij thuis mee helpen om geld binnen te brengen. Hij moest touw oprollen en dat moest heel snel gaan, een hele dag lang. De tijd die hij nu in zijn studio spendeert is voor hem de speeltijd die hij als kind gemist heeft.
Wallace Chan lives a bit like a hermit. Sometimes he doesn't leave his studio for 3 months when he's working on a project. Achieving such mastery demands something from a person. Passion alone is not enough; obsession seems to be a better description. This artist constantly seeks out new materials and ways to master them. Once he has them under control, it's time to look for something new. Wallace Chen grew up in extreme poverty. From the age of 5, he had to help bring in money at home. He had to roll up rope very quickly, all day long. The time he spends in his studio now, he considers to be the playtime he missed as a child.
De vlinders van Wallace Chan - Wallace Chan's butterflies
"Ben ik een mens die droomt dat hij een vlinder is of ben ik een vlinder die droomt dat hij een mens is?" Deze bedenking door de grondlegger van het Taoïsme heeft een grote invloed op Wallace Chan, hij leeft ergens tussen realiteit en droom. Vrijheid is zijn hoogste goed.
Voor zijn vlinder reeks, waarvan al een kleine honderd exemplaren bestaan, vormt transformatie het grote thema. Uit een kleine, alledaagse rups komt uiteindelijk een machtige vlinder voort. "Flying colours in the sky", noemt Wallace ze. In zijn vlinder broches worden echte vleugels gebruikt. Ze worden vacuüm geplaatst tussen een laagje parelmoer en bergkristal. Zo blijft de pracht bewaard voor de toekomst.
Het bergkristal en het titanum zijn op zich harde, stevige materialen. Ze worden echter zodanig vormgegeven dat ze echt lijken te bewegen.
Om die beweging te onderzoeken, blies Wallace met een haardroger op een wateroppervlak. Na de bewegingen nauwkeurig te observeren, bootste hij ze na in het bergkristal dat over de vlindervleugels geplaatst wordt.
Hij plaatst het bergkristal niet enkel over de vleugels, maar ook over andere edelstenen, wat een heel speciaal kleur effect geeft.
"Am I a person dreaming that I am a butterfly, or am I a butterfly dreaming that I am a person?" This contemplation by the founder of Taoism has a profound influence on Wallace Chan; he lives somewhere between reality and dream. Freedom is his highest good.
For his butterfly series, of which he has made a hundred specimens, transformation is the central theme. A small, ordinary caterpillar eventually becomes a powerful butterfly. Wallace calls them "Flying colours in the sky." Real butterfly wings are used in his butterfly brooches. They are vacuum-sealed between a layer of mother-of-pearl and rock crystal, preserving their beauty for the future.
While rock crystal and titanium are inherently hard, sturdy materials, Wallace shapes them in a way that makes them seem to move. To study this movement, Wallace blew with a hairdryer onto a water surface. After carefully observing the movements, he replicated them in the rock crystal placed over the butterfly wings.
He doesn't just place the rock crystal over the wings but also over other gemstones, creating a very special color effect.
Edelstenen worden ook gebruikt in de zettingen van andere edelstenen en als versiering in parels. Zelf ben ik vooral fan van de iets meer sobere kunstwerken, zoals de twee cicades hierboven. Ook zijn beeldeninstallatie "Titans" vind ik betoverend. Zijn beheersing van materiaal en textuur zijn een grote inspiratiebron.
Gemstones are also used in the settings of other gemstones and as an embellishment in pearls. Personally, I am most fond of the slightly more subdued artworks, such as the two cicadas above. I also find his sculpture installation "Titans" enchanting. His mastery of material and texture is a great source of inspiration for me.
